Head of Engineering (Education Platform)

Makers helps people to change their careers and organisations to grow their teams at entry-level. We do this through training Software Engineers and placing them in organisations. You lead our platform engineering team. Your role, with them, is to build the software platform that will enable us to deliver the best software engineering learning experience in the world in a way that scales to our growth ambitions

What you'll be doing in the role

Developing the Vision

How can a learning platform enable transformative learning experiences? You will develop this vision in collaboration with the vision the team has for what the best technical education in the world looks like. You will embed this not just in your team, but the wider organisation and curriculum.

Day to day, this involves regular communication with our learners, coaches, clients, and leaders to clarify your ideas and build out our vision with them. As the platform takes shape, you will spend time working with the team and stakeholders to help them implement the vision in practice.

Engineering Management

Making the platform a reality involves building software. You will manage this process, ensuring that the processes of analysis and design yield the insight necessary for smooth development, deployment, and ongoing maintenance.

Day to day, this involves maintaining a roadmap, supporting the team to break up features into tickets and to deliver a product that meets the standard of quality necessary for continued swift development.

Architectural Planning

As a small team with big ambitions, carefully considered architectural choices are important to prevent costly and avoidable mistakes. You will think carefully through the big decisions of structure and design, leveraging the knowledge in the organisation to build the right thing in an extensible way.

Day to day, this will involve discussing with stakeholders and the engineering team to understand the business and technical context, then preparing high level designs for the team to work to (either in the form of documentation or working code).

Developing the Team

Our staff value growth. You will be responsible for supporting the growth of your team, both through recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing professional development.

Day to day this will involve regular 1:1s covering both development objectives, coaching, and mutual feedback.

Formal Responsibilities

  • Build, monitor, and approve the budget for the Platform Engineering area.

  • We have a clear vision for our training & learning platform which the organisation understands and is bought into.
  • We are making visible and sustained progress in building the platform against our roadmap.
  • Our platform meets the standard of quality necessary for a continued good pace of development.
  • Our platform systems operate reliably.
  • Stakeholders are highly satisfied in their interactions with the platform (either in the sense that it works well enough that they don’t notice it, or that it delivers an excellent experience).

Who we're looking for

  • Build Vision in Partnership - You can meet with a group of people, understand their problems and ambitions, develop with them a vision of the future, and then hold it for them long-term. You know when to bring your own ideas and when to build on those of others.
  • Grow an Engineering Team - You will be able to take us from two people to a well-functioning team. You will be able to wear all the hats to get things done in the short term, while planning to hand them over to your new hires over time.
  • Pragmatically Consider Decisions - You don’t gloss over important details in the planning or building process. You know when to ask “but what if…?”, when to take the time to design flexible solutions, and when to just get things started.
  • Build Software Products - For this role, some all-round experience is important. You don’t need to be a great designer but you should be able to design straightforward usable interfaces. You don’t need to be a brilliant engineer, but you should be able to build things out if needed. You don’t need to be a sophisticated project manager, but you should be able to keep things on track.
